Easter is upon us once again. So what happens at Easter in Ireland? Well, for a start all pubs are closed on Good Friday; the only other day apart from Christmas when you can’t enjoy a pint of Guinness. Most Irish people take the opportunity to have a party or a barbecue in their house – the fun never stops here in Ireland!
We are far less artistic and inventive than our continental counterparts when it comes to Easter eggs. There parents paint eggs all kinds of bright colours and then they are hidden in the garden for the children to find, believing that the Easter Bunny hid them there. We, on the other hand, simply buy big chocolate eggs and leave them out for the children. Far less fun, I’m sure you’ll agree, though the kids have fun stuffing themselves with chocolate then running amok for the day on a sugar rush. I certainly have fond memories of it and I’ll admit that my Mum still gives me a chocolate egg every year!
Most people go away to the country for the weekend as they have Friday and Monday off. This means Dublin is nice and quiet for a change.
It’s also at this time of year that we remember the 1916 Easter Rising, when Irish rebels took up arms against the English in a largely unsuccessful weeklong campaign that was to change the course of Irish history. Look out for great movies about that period in Irish history: Michael Collins, starring Liam Neeson and Julia Roberts and The Wind That Shakes The Barley starring Cillian Murphy. For more information on The Easter Rising check out this website: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easter_Rising

Happy Easter!!

Well, despite ‘The 2012 Phenomenon’, in which the Mayans predicted the end of the world this year, we are still here! I hope none of you had the misfortune of seeing the Hollywood movie 2012 back in 2009…Unlike the Mayans we here in DSE have been looking forward to 2012 and are really quite excited now that it’s here because it looks like it’s going to be a cracker of a year. We have more nationalities than ever coming to study with us this year, learning English, preparing for exams, taking new courses in Westmoreland College and getting a taste of Ireland’s cultural heritage on our free Cultural Programme.

This year we’ll have students from Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, France, Belgium, Argentina, The Czech Republic, Poland, Russia, Mongolia, Venezuela and Turkey – I’m sure there are a couple of nationalities I have left out – there are just so many! If I haven’t mentioned your home country, please drop us a mail and I’ll add you to the list. Let’s not forget the range of nationalities we have on our teaching staff: Irish, English, American even South African!

When you get that many nationalities mingling together the school is such a vibrant place with students of all ages getting to know each other, sharing their experiences and culture, hanging out, going for coffee or a pint and going on interesting Cultural Programme tours in Dublin and around the country with their DSE teacher-guides. It’s so great to see that everyone finds common ground in speaking English – the world really has become a small place because now we all have this uniting tool – English – to bring us closer together.

Being right in the city centre, in Temple Bar, the students have so many things to do: whether it’s going for a stroll round town, shopping, grabbing a spot of lunch together or catching a movie in the Irish Film Institute or even going to the theatre or hearing some free live music in one of the traditional Irish pubs right beside the school. Temple Bar really is the only place to be in Dublin and it’s DSE’s playground!

2012 promises to be a really fun year here in Ireland with more festivals than ever, have a look here. And let’s not forget Saint Patrick’s’ Festival is fast approaching – check out the calendar of events here. And remember to check in to the school’s Facebook if you want to be in the loop for events going on in the school and around the country.
